Objective
This study aims to contribute to understanding mechanisms of age discrimination and the labor market exclusion and the role of meso level characteristics, practices and policies on age discrimination and the labor market exclusion in late working life.
Background
Since age discrimination mainly emerges at firm level and employment opportunities are closely related with local labor market conditions and policies, meso level characteristics, practices and policies are crucial for the manifestation of age discrimination in the labor market. In Sweden, municipalities play an important role in economic development, labor market policies and programs. However, there is lack of knowledge about the role of local employment policies and organizational structures on the age discrimination in late working life.
Data and Research Questions
Using Swedish National Register Data by Statistics Sweden between the years 1990 and 2015, this study tries to answer the following questions:
- How are the late working life patterns of individuals between the years 1990 and 2015 in Sweden?
- Do these working life patterns differ by different age groups?
- Can these age group differences be explained by other factors?
- If there are unexplained differences between different age groups, do they differ across different firms, sectors, municipalities?
